Mermaids are my jam. I even had pastel turquoise hair for an entire year in 2015! When I saw the Mermaid’s Tail Stamp Set and Coordinating Dies on Ellen Hutson (designed by Julie Ebersole), I lost it. I had to have it because it was just so stinkin’ cute. The sentiments in this stamp set are also a total riot and will probably bring a huge smile to your face (“Mermaids Don’t Have Thigh Gaps”). The sass is strong in this stamp set, but there’s also really great everyday sentiments such as “Just Keep Swimming” and “Seas The Day.” I decided to make this an encouragement card because when I think of looking to lift someone’s mood, I think of bright, cheerful colors and patterns and this card packs a punch in that department.
For the background, I cut a piece of blue cardstock to 5.5×4.25 inches. I used my Versamark ink with the seashell stamp from MFT’s Mermazing Stamp Set. I filled the entire piece of cardstock, alternating the directions of the seashells. I heat embossed the seashells with white embossing powder. I adhered this piece to the front of my card as the base. I also cut two identical strips of lime green cardstock to fit the top and bottom of the card as a border.
Okay, now the fun part. I stamped the mermaid tail from the stamp set with Versamark ink and heat embossed the pattern with white embossing powder. I pulled out my Distress Oxide Inks and blended together Peacock Feathers, Salty Ocean, and Twisted Citron to get a colorful effect. I die cut it out using my Sizzix Big Shot Cutting/Embossing Machine.
I used foam tape to prop it up in the center of my card. I also tied some blue and green twine I had to the side of my card. I glued the knot down to the paper so that it wouldn’t come undone or slip off the card.
I love how color coordinated everything on this card is. It’s really bright and cheerful, which goes perfect with the encouraging sentiment to keep on keepin’ on.
